The 33-year-old, who has risen above Pele as his country’s all-time leading goalscorer, managed just seven appearances for Al-Hilal before seeing his lucrative contract terminated. An injury-ravaged spell in the Middle East led to Neymar facing accusations of becoming a fading force.

He has, however, embraced an opportunity to return to his roots at boyhood club Santos. An initial six-month deal has been agreed there, allowing Neymar to rebuild form and fitness. A first goal back in familiar surroundings was recorded from the penalty spot in a meeting with Agua Santa.
