The Premier League splashed out a staggering £1.4billion during the summer transfer window, but whether it was money well spent remains to be seen.
Indeed, summer 2017 was unique in the sheer scale of price-tags, not only in England but also across Europe, even compared to the relentless inflation of recent years.
As a general rule of thumb, transfer fees appear to have doubled from this point twelve months ago, creating an incredibly difficult environment for clubs to recruit in while ensuring they still find good value for money.
Chelsea faced that challenge too, perhaps most tellingly spending £35million on Danny Drinkwater on Deadline Day – £3million more than they paid the same club for N’Golo Kante, arguably the best ball-winning midfielder in the world, just last year.
So Chelsea fans, now the dust has settled on what will likely be remembered as the most ridiculous transfer window ever, who do you think was the Premier League’s signing of the summer?
