The Portuguese media do love a transfer rumour, and although Record’s weekend claims about Goncalo Guedes bidding farewell to his team-mates ahead of a potential move to Manchester United before the looming transfer deadline may prove to be wide of the mark, it still raises an interesting debate.
Indeed, with Memphis Depay having been shipped out to Lyon, there may be a temptation on the part of Jose Mourinho to draft in another attacking outlet, especially with his in-form Man United still stuck in sixth place in the Premier League, despite showing red-hot form through December and into the New Year.

Perhaps another threat to introduce from the bench or start in certain fixtures could make the difference when it comes to hauling themselves over the line to claim a top four finish, and Guedes’ numbers show that he could be an intriguing option…
Granted, the transfer from Portugal’s Primeira Liga to the Premier League is not always a smooth one, but the 20-year-old has shown real promise this season in Lisbon, and the fact that he’s managed his return despite missing nearly 20% of Benfica’s minutes this term is all the more impressive.
Guedes has the headline stats of two goals and two assists, but it’s his key pass and shots counts that are most impressive, with both coming in at well over one-per-match. He’s also a handy dribbler, too, with 21 completed, showing that he’s not afraid to get on the ball and take on opponents.
