John Terry will not be fit to play for England against Ukraine on Tuesday, a statement on the official FA website has confirmed.
The Chelsea centre-half picked up an ankle injury in Friday’s game against Moldova, and was forced to continue playing as the Three Lions had already made their three substitutions.
Roy Hodgson had admitted that Terry was a doubt for the next game due to the knock, and it has now been revealed that the defender will not play a part at Wembley.
“Following further treatment from the England medical staff today [Sunday 9 September], John Terry will not be available for the World Cup qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday,” the statement reads.
Club team-mate Gary Cahill looks likely to take the former captain’s place in Hodgson’s starting XI, however Phil Jagielka is also in the running for the position.
England won their first World Cup qualifier 5-0 on Friday and will look to double their points tally with another victory over Ukraine on Tuesday.
